Infertility: Understanding the Causes, Emotional Challenges, Chakras, and the Supportive Role of Yoga
A compassionate guide to fertility care, emotional wellbeing, and mindful living
Infertility can be a deeply personal and difficult experience. When pregnancy does not happen as expected, people may feel disappointed, anxious, isolated, or uncertain about the future. Medical appointments, repeated tests, and questions from relatives can add to this emotional burden.
However, infertility is a medical condition—not a personal failure. It can involve female factors, male factors, a combination of both, or causes that remain unexplained after investigation. Women should never carry the blame alone.
Yoga may offer support by helping people cope with anxiety and emotional distress during fertility treatment. However, it is not a proven cure for infertility, and chakra practices should not replace medical assessment or treatment.
1. What Is Infertility?
The World Health Organization defines infertility as the failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. This definition applies to reproductive difficulties involving either partner, not only women.
The one-year definition does not mean that everyone should wait a full year before seeking help.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine recommends fertility evaluation:
After 12 months of trying when the woman is younger than 35.
After six months when the woman is 35 or older.
More promptly when the woman is over 40.
Without delay when there are irregular or absent periods, suspected endometriosis, known reproductive problems, or a possible male fertility problem.
Seeking help at the right time can identify treatable conditions and prevent unnecessary delay.
2. What Can Cause Infertility?
Pregnancy depends on several processes working together: ovulation, healthy sperm, fertilization, movement through the fallopian tubes, and implantation in the uterus. A difficulty at one or more stages can affect the chances of conception. Fertility assessment therefore looks at both partners and more than one possible cause.
Female Factors
Possible causes include:
Ovulation problems, including those associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Thyroid disorders or other hormonal disturbances.
