Sciatica and the Yogic Approach

Understanding Symptoms, Movement and Daily Care

Definition

Sciatica describes pain that travels along the sciatic nerve pathway, usually from the lower back or buttock into one leg. It may be accompanied by tingling, numbness or weakness.

It commonly arises from irritation or compression of nerve roots in the lower spine, including from a herniated disc. Direct injury to the sciatic nerve can produce similar symptoms.

Related Terms

Sciatic pain, lumbar radicular pain, sciatic nerve dysfunction and sciatic neuropathy. These terms overlap, but they do not always describe the same underlying condition.

Causes

The original article discusses several causes of sciatic nerve injury or compression:

  • Direct trauma to the buttock, pelvis or thigh.
  • Injury associated with an injection into the buttock.
  • Prolonged external pressure on the nerve.
  • Entrapment by surrounding structures.
  • Pelvic fractures or other significant injuries.
  • Pressure from a tumour, abscess or bleeding.
  • Nerve damage associated with conditions such as diabetes.

A herniated lumbar disc is also a common cause of sciatica through irritation or compression of a spinal nerve root. Sometimes, the precise cause remains uncertain.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain extending into the buttock, leg or foot.
  • Tingling, burning or unusual sensations.
  • Numbness or reduced sensation.
  • Weakness affecting the leg or foot.
  • Difficulty walking or moving comfortably.
  • Difficulty lifting the foot in more severe cases.

New bladder or bowel-control problems, numbness around the groin, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs requires emergency assessment.

Traditional Yogic Practices

The original article presents the following practices. They are a reference list, rather than a single routine suitable for every person with sciatica. Selection and modification should account for the cause of pain and individual movement tolerance.

1. Shatkarma

Nauli: A specialized abdominal practice requiring qualified instruction.

2. Yogasanas

AsanaEnglish description
VajrasanaThunderbolt Pose
Ardha Matsyendrasana Half Spinal Twist
BrahmacharyasanaTraditional posture; form varies by school
BhujangasanaCobra Pose
KonasanaAngle Pose
AsvathasanaListed as Horse Posture in the source; exact form needs identification
PaschimottanasanaSeated Forward Bend
ShavasanaCorpse Pose
PawanmuktasanaWind-Relieving Pose
MakarasanaCrocodile Pose
DhanurasanaBow Pose
TadasanaStanding Mountain Pose
UtkatasanaChair or squatting variation, depending on the tradition

The duplicate entry for Makarasana has been removed. Strong stretches, twists and backbends should not be forced or continued when they increase radiating pain.

3. Pranayama

Kapalabhati: A forceful exhalation practice. The original description of “washing the lungs and brain” has been replaced with its actual breathing description.

4. Bandha

Uddiyana Bandha: Abdominal Lock.

5. Mudras

  • Vayu Mudra.
  • Akashi Mudra, as named in the source.

6. Dhyana

Meditation provides time for quiet attention and relaxation.

Movement, Posture and Recovery

The original article emphasizes gentle exercise, postural awareness and muscular support.

Appropriately selected movement can support everyday function and gradual return to activity. NICE recommends considering exercise programmes—including mind–body approaches—for low-back pain with or without sciatica, according to individual needs and capabilities.

Comfortable walking, suitable exercises and changes of position can form part of recovery. Yoga should be adapted to the individual; the claim that it has greater impact than every other form of exercise is not established.

Yogic Diet

The source favours a predominantly vegetarian diet with vegetables, grains, lighter pulses and moderate quantities of fats and oils.

Foods Mentioned

  • Bottle gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd and drumstick.
  • Green papaya, plantain, brinjal, spinach and other vegetables.
  • Wheat, maize, buckwheat and barley.
  • Mung, arhar and masur.
  • Ginger, cumin, turmeric, coriander and other tolerated seasonings.
  • Milk products according to tolerance.
  • Papaya, apples, pears and pomegranate.
  • Water at a comfortable temperature.

The source also recommends limiting fried foods, heavily processed foods, alcohol and excessive fats. Its restrictions on citrus fruits, curd, rice and pulses represent a traditional dietary approach rather than universal requirements for sciatica.

Garlic, turmeric and saffron may be used as ordinary food ingredients when tolerated. Fixed medicinal doses and the 60 ml castor-oil instruction are omitted from this general article; constipation treatment needs individual selection.

Daily Care

  • Remain active within comfortable limits rather than staying in bed for prolonged periods.
  • Use comfortable walking, standing and sleeping positions.
  • Choose a supportive sleeping surface; an unpadded hard bed is not a universal requirement.
  • Gentle movement or warm-water activity may be suitable according to tolerance.
  • Heat packs may provide comfort, with protection against burns.

Belts and corsets are not routinely recommended for managing sciatica.

Other Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of symptoms. It may include rehabilitation, individually selected medicines, specialist injections or surgery in selected cases.

For acute, severe sciatica, an epidural injection may be considered. This is delivered into the epidural space, not directly into spinal fluid. .

Experience Reported by Yogi Yoganand

According to information provided by Yogi Yoganand, he reports that 1,000 people with sciatica recovered through Pran Yog.
